Mayor Calling Residents Who Don't Like Noise At BTL Park To Come Out
posted (June 19, 2017)
In the meantime, the Mayor is hoping that those Belize City residents who live around the BTL park will come out on Wednesday evening to a public meeting.

The Council is trying to address the concerns of those citizens who complain that the BTL park is to noisy on most nights that they want peace and quiet. As viewers are aware, it's a popular venue for music and entertainment events, and it's also the location of the Pier 1 Bar, that opens for business during the weekend. Combine those with the other night-life spots the area, and the residents complain that they are harassed by the noise pollution.

The Mayor told us this evening, that if you want to be heard on your concerns, come out on Wednesday evening:

Darrell Bradley, Mayor - Belize City
"One of the things that we really want to highlight here is the importance of proper planning and proper zoning. So that you would have seen that there is a major degree of development in terms of infrastructure and parks. But we have gotten negative or backlash in relation to some of these developments."

"I remember when we were doing Battlefield Park right here, we got negative heat from the taxi drivers. Likewise with BTL Park and with the infrastructures that we have done there, we've gotten a major degree of backlash from residents in that community. They have complain about the issuance of liquor licenses and trade licenses to new businesses in that area."

"I am very excited because I see a new restaurant going up. It's the Midtown Restaurant and Bar. That's going to add a new feature around there. But we want to make sure that we get it right with relation to zoning and planning, so that on Wednesday at 6-7pm we are going to have a public meeting at BTL Park to discuss the noise concern. So that yes I get texts and I get meetings and I sit down with people who are residents in the area who complain about the noise and so forth."

"We want to have a public meeting so that you will have the trade license persons, you will have the representatives from the liquor license board and we've invited members of the business community in that area, to have a short conversation with residents in that area so that there could be dialogue and they could discuss in relation to their concerns."

"One of the things that's we've done there is that we've banned music in the park on Sundays. That's a thing that residents had asked us to do, that they didn't really want music in the park. We said at least Sunday we can be respectful and we can shut that down. But I think the public meeting will go far to allow people to at least vent their frustration in relation to some of the works that are going on."

"Yes, it's good for business, yes it's good for the development and the look of Belize City, yes its good for tourists. But we need to also recognize that we are having an impact on certain elements of the community including the residents and so this public meeting on Wednesday from 6-7pm will allow people to air their concerns in relation to that."

The public meeting starts at 6 p.m.
