Caught By Social Media, Jailed By The Chief Magistrate
posted (June 20, 2017)
A little over a year after being charged for the burglary of Spoonaz Cafe on North Front Street, Derrick Garbutt has been sentenced 7 years in prison. In May 2016, security cameras caught Garbutt breaking into the cafe and stealing several bottles of alcohol and a pellet gun valued at a total of $1750.

After realizing that he had been robbed, the cafe's owner, Jeremy Spooner, turned to social media to catch the criminal. After posting footage of the burglary to Facebook, Garbutt was quickly identified and handed over to police by Spooner himself.

Garbutt, who is already serving time for a previous burglary conviction, will only have to serve 6 years of this sentence because he was remanded into custody for 1 year before the trial.
