Crime Stoppers And The Community

Crime Stoppers is an NGO created to assist law enforcement in solving crimes and locating illegal drugs and firearms. It relies on anonymous tips from members of the community who may be aware of suspicious or dangerous activities happening around them.

Today a Belize's main security forces were invited to participate in a workshop hosted by Crime Stoppers international. Representatives from Crime Stopper's El Salvador branch made presentations focused on working with the community to track down illicit drugs, guns and contraband goods. We spoke to the Vice Chair of Crime Stoppers Belize, Lauren Reardon Smith, about the event...

"We are a part of a larger umbrella which is Crime Stoppers International which is a worldwide program and they are here doing a training on illicit activities, giving the training to our security forces countrywide. So we've been Corozal yesterday, Belize City, the west and the south and what they are doing is that the training is based on illicit activities like contraband and counterfeit products which is IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) and kind of explaining the impact on our economy as well as the world when the smugglers they take hold of contraband and they then fund terrorist groups, narcotics. They are here to help our police know more about it and to collaborate with the different countries, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador to try and put a stop to this smuggling and counterfeit products."
