MIT Makes Major Weed Bust in Cattle Truck
posted (June 21, 2017)

Today in Western Belize the Police Mobile Interdiction Team made a large marijuana bust - totaling about 70 pounds.  And while the weight is significant, what's more interesting is how the drugs were being smuggled. 37 parcels of weed were neatly packed into a hidden compartment in the bed of a cattle truck.  The MIT made the bust near Ontario village - and Superintendent Leslie Wade says they had to take the truck back to their base to find the hidden compartment:…

Supt. Leslie Wade - OC, MIT
"We intercepted one of these small cow trucks coming across from the Guatemalan border. The truck based on information that we have received an intelligence it was brought to the mobile interdiction base here at the national police training academy where we conducted an intense search on it where a secret compartment was discovered which contained several parcels of marijuana. At this present moment we have seen some crime here, we are conducting a tour check of the vehicle and the drugs are being made at this time. As to the exact amount, I do not have that at this time."

The 37 parcels weighed in at 33 kilos, which is 72 pounds.  It is believed that the driver who is from Benque Viejo would take cattle across one of the illegal border crossings into Guatemala - and then come back up loaded with weed - which would then be distributed to Belmopan and Southern Belize.  The driver hasn't yet been charged.
