And while the nightclubs are one thing - another popular spot in that same entertainment strip is The Hour Bar. That's Belize City's top concert venue but the mayor sent a memo to his councilors saying that concerts should not be held there - and definitely not until 4:00 am. Today, faced by one of those promoters, he seems to have backed down somewhat from that hardline - and said that some concerts are ok:...

"The law does provide that a special event can go as long as 5am in the morning. One of the things I will say with the public consultation is that none of the people in that consultation said that they don't want these events. There is I think on the point of the residents themselves some reasonable expectation that you know what September, December - if we have to go somewhere else we are going, if we have to go at the event then we are going, but we can live with it as a special event, as a one-off concert. But don't let it be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and then Sunday, because when would I sleep."
"Yes you may be there partying, yes I may be there with you partying, but you have to consider that you are in the heart of a neighborhood community. So that there cannot be any cancelling of an event. There cannot be any - if the law provides that there is a special event license, there has to be a special event license. I can't take out what is in the law. All we are saying is if that is in the law, can we have a discussion in relation to what is reasonable. I will say that having an event and having that event go to 4am in the morning in a residential area, my opinion is and this is stepping back as mayor - my opinion is that that is unreasonable. But I only have one vote on the council. If the councilors out vote me, that's my position."
Multiple concerts are already lined up for the Hour Bar this September.
