Mayor Denies Massive Arrears To Sanitation Company
posted (June 29, 2017)
And so if the city is going to lose a significant chunk of its revenue, it has to find ways to replace it - and fast! We say that, because, from the looks of things, the Council is already struggling and juggling to keep current with its weekly sanitation expenses and bi-monthly payroll. Today we asked the mayor about mounting arrears to Belize Waste Control:..,.

Jules Vasquez
"I am reliably told that right now you owe quarter million to Belize Waste Control for 5 weeks of unpaid garbage fees. I am told that payroll is here and you don't have a lot in the bank to handle your payroll."

Darrell Bradley, Mayor
"The city administrator has inform me that we are 3 weeks in arrears with Waste Control. The contract provide is a leeway or reprieve to be 4 weeks in arears, so that it's not an anomaly that we would be in arrears with them."

"Clearly we are not cashy and all is not well in Denmark, but we have done well in relation to our financial stewardship and our main statement on accountability and transparency."

"I will not take it higher than it is to say that we are perfect, to say that we are excellent. I will never give this city council an A by way of a grade, but I will say that you can see demonstrated efforts that we are moving forward."

As of tomorrow, the council will be one more week in arrears to Waste Control.
