Retired Teacher Run Over Early On Sunday
posted (July 10, 2017)
A 60 year old retired teacher was knocked down and killed this weekend. At around 5:00 yesterday morning, Rene Gutierrez was driving along the Phillip Goldson Highway on his motorcycle. He left his house along the highway to pick up a friend in Belize City. 37 year old Anthony Humes was also heading to Belize City in his Wingle and he knocked Gutierrez off his cycle in front of Caribbean Tires. Gutierrez did not survive the impact. We spoke to Gutierrez's brother this evening about the accident.

Javier Gutierrez, Brother
"What I gathered is that he was heading home then returned back to pick up someone and the someone that he was going to pick up then called him to tell him not to pick them up again but they didn't contact him so they contact another person to tell him (Gutierrez) not to pick him up again but nobody could not contact him I guess the accident happened then."

"So they asked me when I went to the site if they could find out if anyone was with him so they can search for another body because they found 2 helmets in pieces and that is when I went to check and that is what I gathered so I said no there is ..fortunate he didn't t pick up the other person and that is why there was two helmets in pieces because he was taking a helmet for the other person."

"He is a very happy person very friendly, he had a lot of friends who like to do karaoke, he have a lot of karaoke friends."

Courtney Weatherburne
"You ever thought that you would have lost your brother in an accident like this."

Javier Gutierrez, Brother
"No no because he taught all of us to drive, he was a very careful driver so we never thought he would end up like this."

Gutierrez taught at several schools in Dangriga and Belize City. He also worked for his brother who is an architect. He leaves behind 2 kids. Police told us that they are still investigating this case.
