Commissioner Speaks About Guatemalan Bandits
posted (July 11, 2017)
The media also asked about was the gunfight between Cayo Police and armed Guatemalan car-thieves.

As we told you, on Saturday afternoon, police chased the 2 bandits who stole a pickup truck on the Chaa Creek Road. The bandits were trying to get the vehicle across the border, but they lost control and crashed on the Calla Creek Road.

The thieves tried to flee on foot, but they ended up in a shootout with police, and one of them was fatally injured. While the professional standards branch has launched an investigation to look at the use of deadly force, there is the criminal investigation as well.

As we told you, for the last few years, stolen Toyota Hiluxes have been steadily making their way from the Cayo District into Guatemala. The Commissioner commented on that:

Reporter
"It also seem as though there is a ring operating that crosses border between neighboring Melchor and Cayo District. One person is dead and another person is hospitalized under police watch. Are you guys working with your counterparts in Guatemala to try to understand the operation of this ring and who the players are?"

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police
"Yes, we've always shared information through our special branch contact with our counterparts over there. Additionally there is normally a monthly meeting held between the commander of the Benque from the Belize side and the commander at Melchor de Mencos where they share these kinds of information. In deed we have had a number of vehicles stolen over the years, so there is a well-organized ring operating. We've been able to recover several vehicles from over Guatemala with the assistance of our counterparts and in this case over this weekend well the quick response of the police led to the recovery of that vehicle and the unfortunate incident of the shooting resulting in the death of one of the robbers."

Later on in the news, you'll hear the commissioner discuss crime statistics.
