Murder for 2017 is Down, Just Slightly
posted (July 11, 2017)
Earlier in the news, we showed you the comments from Police Commissioner Allen Whylie on 3 incidents that have been making the evening news since late last week. We got the opportunity to ask those questions when he held a joint press conference with Police Minister Elodio Aragon Jr. and CEO George Lovell. They were discussing the crime statistics for the past 6 months when compared to the same period last year.

Here's what the Police Commissioner had to say about the murder total which is down by 3:

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police
"The statistics that was released showed that in terms of major incidents for murders, it shows that from January to June 2016 we had 73, compared to 2017 where we had 70 at that time. It terms of rape it shows for 2016 up to the end of January we had cases where at the end of June 2017 we had 8 cases. In terms of robbery it showed that we had 98 cases of robbery in 2016 compared to 92 cases in 2017. In terms of burglary it showed that we had 389 cases reported compared to 329 at the end of June 2017 and in terms of theft it showed that we had 51 cases reported at the end of June 2016 compared to 34 cases at the end of June 2017."

"That total in terms of major incidents showed that at the end of June 2016, you had 1,070 cases reported compared to the end of June 2017 where we had 866 cases reported which again shows a reduction in reported cases in major incidents."

"That statistics also revealed a number of arrest in respect to those various incidents of crime. Again, it showed that comparative June 2016-June 2017 there is an increase in the number of arrest for the various category of crimes. Murders are down. Any murder is unacceptable and so I take no consolation that murders are down. Our preventative patrols countrywide are out. We continue to provide additional support to the Corozal District as well as the Cayo District where we had seen some recent cases of murders."
