Comparing Crime On South And Northside
posted (July 12, 2017)

Last night, we gave you a short excerpt of joint press conference that Police Commissioner Allen Whylie held with Police Minister Elodio Aragon Jr. and CEO George Lovell. He was discussing the crime statistics for the last 6 months, and after he gave a broad overview of the number of major crimes reported countrywide, he then began breaking down the number of murders recorded in each district.

One area that he was careful to examine was the Police Eastern Division. That covers the entire Belize District, but we start first with the snapshot of Eastern Division North and South, which covers Belize City itself.

Here’s what the numbers say about the country’s largest population center and number one crime hotspot:

Allen Whylie- Commissioner of Police
“In terms of murders by precinct, precinct 1 had eight murders at the end of June 2016 and they have recorded seven murders at the end of June 2017, so that was a reduction of one case. Precinct 2 recorded seventeen incidents of murders in 2017 at the end of June, compared to ten cases at the end of in 2016 at the end of June; so again, that recorded an increase. So, between Precinct 1 and Precinct 2, which is the Southside Command, has had twenty-four cases of murders at the end of June 2017 compared to eighteen cases at the end of June 2016. Precinct 3 recorded five cases of murder up to the end of June 2017 compared to one case at the end of June 2016. Precinct 4 recorded no murders for 2016 nor 2017. That indicates that, again, on the north side, the North Command, there was an increase in murder in terms of five murders compared to one at the end of June 2016. In terms of San Pedro, at the end of June 2017, they had recorded one murder compared to the end of June 2016 which had recorded three murders. Caye Caulker had recorded no murders compared to one murder which was recorded in June 2016, which indicated that at the end of June the coastal area had one murder compared to four murders in 2016. We know that number has since changed from last week to this week.â€￾
