BSI and BSCFA Have Substantial Differences
posted (July 13, 2017)
As you heard last night, ASR/BSI and the three cane farmers associations will have a very busy off - season. They have to agree on a way forward in a changing market landscape. ASR/BSI wants a 7 year commitment from the farmers groups to make a 20+ million dollar investment that they say would give the industry better market position. But the largest association which is the BSCFA doesn't feel comfortable moving forward on that just yet. They still have unfinished bagasse business with ASR/BSI - which Mac McLachlan lamented in an interview with CTV-3:...

Mac MacLachlan, BSI - Senior VP
"We understand and we've been given a sort of counter proposal that starts looking back at some of the old issues that we had to face a few years ago, the issue of payment for bagasse, the issues for ownership of cane, these types of things that held this industry back for a long time. .That was frankly a little bit disappointing. We thought what we were doing was presenting there a really good opportunity for the whole industry, and, ahm and so we were kind of what kind of waiting I suppose for BSCFA to come back to us and say it say what they think about the proposal though we have already seen their counter proposal so that would indicate that there are some issues with it."

"You know we've, we've been through that process with bagasse we went through it and it was a very painful process for the mill and for farmers who lost a lot of money because of the delays in the crop."

ASR/SBSI AND THE BSCFA MET TODAY.
