Maypen Gets New Bridge After Long Wait

For almost 35 years, the residents of Maypen in the rural Belize District have been relying on an old, wooden bridge to cross over Black Creek and get to and from their village. Over the years, the bridge became dilapidated, making it even more difficult for villagers with produce to cross it. Now, that problem has been solved. Today the Ministries of Transport and Works officially opened a new metal bridge connecting Maypen to the rest of the country. We went to the opening ceremony and spoke to Belize Rural North Area Rep. Edmund Castro as well as one of the Village Councillors about the advantages the new bridge provides...
While the bridge marks much needed progress, residents say that they are still waiting for improvements to the roads in order to help with chronic flooding in the area.
