Judge Didn't Believe Cops
posted (July 19, 2017)

Two women were acquitted of charges of assaulting a police officer in the Magistrate's Court today. According to reports made by PC Cynthia Turner, in November 2016, Shanique Meighan and Deva Gaynair were parked in front of the Holy Redeemer Credit Union when she approached them. Turner alleges that as she got closer, the pair assaulted, obstructed and used indecent language against her, despite her being armed with a pistol.

Both Meighan and Gaynair denied the allegations. Stating that a struggle ensured when Turner tried to take the keys to the vehicle away from Meighan and arrest them for no reason.

In court this afternoon, Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith found that neither of the police witnesses were credible, and said that the Crown did not present any evidence that proved its case against the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. So, she found Meighan and Gaynair not guilty of all charges, namely assault, obstruction and using obscene language and indecent words.
