Courts Scholarship Winners

Today 8 kids from all over the country were awarded the Courts “Dare to Dreamâ€￾ 4 year high school scholarship. There were about 65 applicants â€" 25 were interviewed and 8 of them were chosen. A small awards ceremony was held this morning at the Chamber of Commerce building and PR officer Grisel Carballo along with two recipient’s discussed the impact this scholarship will have on their academic life.

"What they will be getting today is that they are going to give our scholarship program will consist of 80 percent, books, tuition and fees what this consist of is it consist that what we do we want; our commitment would be the 80 percent the 20 percent commitment will be of the parent and the commitment of the child will of course be to maintain a grade point average of 3.0 and above every semester."

"The idea of the Courts Dare to Dream scholarship program is we want to give Belizeans an opportunity to dare to dream, by daring to dream is for them to go to school. Our company emphasizes a lot on education and we focus a lot, this is huge opportunity and a huge step for us to serve our Belizean community."

"Now you, from what we understand, you are a cancer patient and you struggled long and hard to get to this point, talk to us more about that."

"I have been a cancer patient for 3 years right now and currently just went out in remission but after 5 years I will be totally cancer free. When I used to go get treatment and when I come back to school I would catch up with my teachers and my friends and ask them what homework we had and if we had any test and if we did I would check with my teacher and take it."

"This will give me my 4 years of study so that I can go to university and so I hope to get a scholarship to Cuba and be a doctor and come back to Belize here."

Courts has been awarding scholarships for 22 years. Carballo says that their scholarship committee stays in contact with the recipients and provides mentoring. If you want to apply for next year you can get more information at any Courts office.
