Police Detain Alleged Mother and Sister For Discarded Baby
posted (July 24, 2017)
Over the weekend police detained two women for the baby that was found in East Canal last Thursday. The women are the suspected mother and her sister - who works at the hospital - and is believed to have delivered the baby. Our reports say the mother refused to say anything - and have both gotten an attorney. The mother was released, and today, Police told us the very little they could about the person they have detained:

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino, Investigator - CIB Precinct 3
"What I can say is that we have spoken to persons of interests and there is one person in custody at this point. Nobody has been charged and the investigation continues."

Daniel Ortiz, reporter
"Sir are you able to say or has the expert explained to you all what is the cause of it? Was it a baby passed away during birthing, after it was born?"

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino
"The baby passed away after birth. I can't say what exactly will happen. We are still continuing the investigation. An investigation like this is quite tedious and it may not produce an arrest today or tomorrow, but we will gather whatever evidence and look at it and seek advice and see if any charges will be levied, if any."

Reporter
"Why the child was discarded in that manner."

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino
"I cannot say at this point why he was discarded in that manner. I think the manner in which he was found speak for itself. But in regards to the investigation at this point, I don't have anything to give you in details and I don't want to venture into details of that.

"We have a 42 year old person detained. It is not the suspected mother, for you information."

Reporter
"So then are you able to say who the suspected mother is?"

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino
"We have persons of interest, we have spoken to the persons of interest and we have interviewed and subsequently released them, but like I said the investigation is ongoing."

Reporter
"So this 42 year old, what's the relation between?"

Reporter
"What's her involvement? Why is she detained?"

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino
"She is detained pending the investigation. I wouldn't want to go into details with regards to that."

Reporter
"Has the mother of the child been identified? Outside your persons of interest and statements being made, has the person who gave birth to the child been identified?"

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino
"We have identified someone who may be the mother in question."

Street sources tell us that the baby was born at 7 months, and we know also that the cause of death - which is respiratory failure - is consistent with a premature birth. We'll keep following the story.
