PM Has To Check The Record

And the press also asked the Prime Minister about whether Cabinet suspended, or completely discontinued the security checks for persons applying for visas and nationalities.

It's one of those issues that have come out of the Senate Hearings on Immigration. Witnesses have told the Senate Select Committee that the Police's Special Branch stopped doing background checks into applicants from countries deemed to be of security concern.

Immigration Officer Ady Pacheco has told the Senate Committee that the security checks were discontinued, and that it was "a Cabinet decision".

So, what does the head of Cabinet say? He said, that he would prefer to check first:

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"I don't remember that. There would be no question of removing the security clearance."

Reporter
"It's possible they said it was suspended."

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"I don't know about that either. I believe it may well have been and I would have to check, so don't hold me to this - that the special branch might have found itself overwhelm and there was a decision to have the clearance done in another fashion. But I really cannot be sure so let me suspend any comment on that until I can check the records."
