What Will Darrell Do In Caribbean Shores?
posted (August 1, 2017)
But while Dion Leslie has his own hands to pray - so to speak, the Mayor has to figure out what's next for him. As he's said, he wants to be in the House of Representatives - but with him now stepping out of the Mayor's chair - his path to a seat in the House is not so clear. We asked him what's his plan:

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"It is counter intuitive to think that you can relinquish a war chest like the city council and still you lost the last time being mayor where you had goods and services to help people with. Well you will lose even worse if you run this time and you are not the mayor and you don't have those goods and services."

Darrell Bradley, Won't run - Endorses Dion Leslie
"My response to that would be firstly, we have never ever used the city council resources to benefit any political ends. Clearly if you are in the office of mayor, you are doing a good job, people will say okay then I like this guy for mayor, I think he is going to do a good job as an area representative - I would vote for him. That is the extent of my using the city council."

"There has been no micromanagement to my detriment I think and I think that many people in our political camp would have wanted us to do more with city council, but I made it a point to say that we would not."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"You launched your candidacy for Caribbean Shores on Blue Marlin Drive, which you've paved. It's in your constituency."

Darrell Bradley
"But clearly I can benefit from the work that we have done. The Blue Marlin Boulevard is one of 150 plus streets that we have done throughout Belize City."

"What I am saying is that I trust in people and I think that when a person offers themselves for leadership, you have to have that faith in the human spirit that they will do the right thing. If I offer myself in Caribbean Shores in the next run, the only sell that I will have for people is my integrity and the work that I have done as mayor."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"But sir, will you continue to act as caretaker?"

Darrell Bradley
"I have to continue to act as caretaker, because I am one hundred percent committed to ensuring that a United Democratic Party is re-elected to city hall."

"One person told me once that if you want to do good, you have to be in office. I think that the United Democratic Party has done good in Belize City. I would hope that they continue to do good and I will be working."

Bradley says he's activating his committee for the municipal elections. But, persistent reports within the UDP is that the party is having active discussions with former UDP Caribbean Shores Representative Santino Castillo to encourage him to run again. This is because many in the leadership of the UDP have grown weary of Mayor Bradley's indecisiveness. We are told Castillo has given positive indications that he would run again - with the party's support.
