Two Tales Lead To Shooting and Car Crash In OW
posted (August 2, 2017)

Yesterday Orange Walk Police responded to a road traffic accident just in front of M-1 Sugar. According to reports, the two passengers, Tiburcio Fernandez and Abdi Aban, had been drinking and, Fernandez, who was driving, lost control of the vehicle. But that's not where the story ends; and it's far from where it begins.

Fernandez told police that he had left San Pedro village earlier that day and was giving Aban a ride, but when they got to the Mameyal Curve, Fernandez says that Aban pulled out a knife, robbed him of his phone and attempted to escape. Fernandez then stopped the car and set chase. He called upon 71 year old Diodoro Novelo who knows the area and the elderly man armed with his licensed .22 rifle shot Aban once to the right foot. After arriving on the scene, police transported Aban to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he was treated and handed back over to police.

After he was released, Aban gave a different story; he alleges that he met Fernandez at La Popular Bakery in Orange Walk Town. From there, the pair went form place to place buying beers. They made it as far as the San Antonio Road; that's when Aban says Fernandez told him that he wanted to have sexual relations with him and proceeded to touch him inappropriately. Aban says he told him to back off, and after a quick struggle, Fernandez lost control and crashed.

When questioned about Aban's story, Fernandez admitted that they had been drinking in Orange Walk.

Both Aban and Fernandez only received minor injuries, which were classified as wounding and harm respectively. Fernandez' rifle was also retrieved from the scene. Both men are currently in police custody and Novelo's rifle has been taken in for processing.
