UNIBAM On UWI Professor Brandan Bain Winning His Case
posted (August 3, 2017)
Orozco also spoke to us briefly about a recent Jamaican Supreme Court decision regarding former UWI Professor Brendan Bain. Earlier this week we told you that Bain won a $32,000 US dollars wrongful termination lawsuit against the University of the West Indies after he was fired for his supposed "anti-gay" testimony against UNIBAM in 2014. The court found that Orozco, who says he has read the testimony, told us what he thought of the decision...

Caleb Orozco - UNIBAM
"I actually read Professor Bain decision and in that decision he establishes that he actually believes that everybody deserves human rights or that human rights apply to all and that his submission was a personal position along with the idea that people must have personal responsibility. What Professor Bain missed in the social environment is that his submission was leveraged by community Belizean oppressors to then seek harm in eroding the dignity and rights of our community. What Professor Bain didn't understand is that you are to be held to a higher standard of expectation when you are holding titles certain serving diverse groups. You cannot expect to say that human rights is for all and then turn around and submit a document that is seeking to harm the very people you are hired to serve. You cannot expect that the people you were hired to serve is to accept the idea or likelihood of harm and still have confidence in that person who is supposed to serve diverse groups. It's simply doesn't work. Now, we cannot argue with the court decision with regards to giving him payment for the remaining part of our contract but we can hold the position that anybody who holds title is in a political or in a significant powerful space of influence or authority must remember that their governance and their responsibility is to all, not to some."

Before he was fired, Bain was the director of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training Network.
