BTV Bex About Re-registraiton Delay
posted (August 3, 2017)
A re-registration exercise is 10 years overdue - and now it's going unto 11 years. The re-registration exercise is to clean up the very messy voters' list. Now it should have been held in July, but the Barrow administration has chosen to postpone it to next year.

But, today the Belize Territorial Volunteers held a press conference to voice their concerns about the latest push back. Here's what they had to say...

Wil Maheia, Leader - Belize Territorial Volunteers
"Really and truly it's the BTV (Belize Territorial Volunteers) that has the meeting just now. Yes it's at the BPP headquarters, but it's a Belize Territorial Volunteers meeting and basically the discussion was we had two learned attorneys in here and we were discussing the possibility of basically of maybe challenging the extension that the GG [Governor General] signed recently for re-registration and postponing it basically until 2018 and again, we are very disturbed that it has been pushed back yet another year when we know that the voters list is very contaminated and out of that discussion also came up the issue of the ICJ and the referendum and what if a referendum is called even before a re-registration. The fact of the matter is that we know that Guatemala, the president and foreign of Guatemala are going around their country and basically talking about going to the ICJ and they are having their referendum I believe this year in October and we do not want to be caught with our pants down or anything like that. Knowing that our voters list is very contaminated. In the room here we had a number of people as you just saw discussing the possibility of probably taking legal actions and that's what the attorneys will be looking at. In a few days we will probably make a decision of we will challenge it or not."

And if the government still needs to come up with the monies to conduct re-registration, Maheia says they can use some of the $60 million from the Taiwanese government. As far as we know, that money is already programmed for budgetary support.
