Another “Viejo” Brutally Killed In Ow District, This One is 85!
posted (August 4, 2017)
And while an infant girl lost her life in Spanish Lookout, in Orange Walk an elderly man was killed. 85 year old Gregorio Leon was murdered in his home between last night and this morning. Jules Vasquez has the story:...

Jules Vasquez reporting
This morning, family members found 85 year old Gregorio De Leon dead in his house here on San Estevan Street in Orange Walk town.

His family found him at 7:38 AM, and at 11:00 police were still combing his small shack and the yard for clues.

Family members looked on, stunned. Police made an effort to give the family some dignity and then for the hardest part, seeing this innocent senior citizen carted out on a stretcher - his death not due to natural causes but at the hands of callous killers:

Insp. Jose Mendez, Deputy OC - Orange Walk
"They observed the motionless body of an elderly person, later identified to be that of Mr. Gregorio De Leon, 85 years old age and was observed seen lying face up with wound injuries to the back of his head."

He lived alone and was last seen the night before by a family member, and sometime during the night, a man or men broke into the house. Police say there was no sign of a struggle:

Insp. Jose Mendez, Deputy OC - Orange Walk
"It appears to be some sort of robbery and the police are looking at all angles at this moment. Presently we have 2 persons detained for questioning."

One of the suspects is from the area but police cannot say what was stolen:

Reporter
"We understand that Mr. De Leon had a substantial amount of money in his house. Is this something that police are looking into?"

Insp. Jose Mendez, Deputy OC - Orange Walk
"We are following that information. Up to presently we haven't ascertain that. At this moment the police are still at the scene. They are still looking for a piece of evidence to help them."

A post mortem found that the old man was killed by manual strangulation.

As he noted, police have two suspects - and we'll keep following their detention.
