Prison’s View On Crime Stats
posted (August 10, 2017)
Last night we took you to the Belize Central Prison where the inmates had a very interesting sit-down with 29 kids from Belmopan. The prisoners spoke on the life they had and how it was all taken away after they were incarcerated. It was a wake-up call for those youths especially young boys who are getting a taste for life on the streets.

Well, as part of that session the Prison CEO Virgilio Murrillo broke out some figures to show the kids what the broader picture of crime in Belize looks like and why we don't need them to be another statistic. According to Murrillo, the leading crimes committed between January to June 2017 are crimes of dishonesty and violent crimes

Virgilio Murrillo, Acting CEO, Belize Central Prison
"This chart shows you the crime people came to prison for during this period Okay? The majority for this period has to do with immigration offenses, those Guatemalans, Hondurans and Salvadorans who keep coming here for illegal entry, entering Belize without documentation. The next big chunk, if you look at the chart has to do with crimes of dishonesty and violent offenses. Crimes of dishonesty are things like robbery, burglary, theft and violent crimes are things like maim and assaults these kinds of things. This chart compares imprisonment by offense with last year and if you notice we saw a little drop with crimes of dishonesty, Immigration offenses went high 19% increase."
