More Gold Panners Caught

A joint patrol team in the Chiquibul has caught 6 more Guatemalan goals panners. They caught them on Saturday the 12th in the area of Ceibo Chico which is five miles within Belize in the southern Chiquibul.

The patrol team, comprising BDF and an FCD park ranger heard voices coming from a camp near the Ceibo Chico creek. They approached and saw four men digging inside a pit, while two others were carrying water in small containers. FCD says the water is used to sift out the earth coming out from the pit, as they separate the gold deposits. Two camps were equipped with clothes, food, machetes and a homemade shotgun.

The group includes three 17 year old's, an 18 year old, a 26 year old and a 38 year old all from areas of Peten on the border with Belize.

After an arduous hike, they were handed over to the San Ignacio Police 18 hours after they ere caught.

They are expected to be charged for illegal entry, mineral extraction without a permit and defacing a protected area.
