PG Cops In Crosshairs
posted (August 14, 2017)
So, early in the news, we told you about a number of the recent cases that have landed on the desk of Assistant Police Commissioner Chester Williams. He's no longer in charge of the challenging Belize City Eastern Division South jurisdiction, but make no mistake, he has no shortage of work at this time.

On Friday's newscast, we told you about the extortion case from PG where two officers were accused of shaking down a principal for $400. That happened on Tuesday, after they found that her vehicle's insurance expired. ACP Williams told us why they've acted swiftly to charge 2 of their own:

ACP Chester Williams, OC - Professional Standards Branch
"A school principal from that district has reported to the police that she was the driver of her motor vehicle when she arrived at a check point within Punta Gorda Town. At the check point her vehicle was inspected by the police who notified her that the insurance of the vehicle had expired 2 days prior. She was then informed of her detention and later was escorted to the Punta Gorda Town Police Station by WPC Jenny Tanner. On the way to the police station, Miss Tanner informed her that the offence was one of a serious nature and that her driver's license will be revoked and her motor vehicle impounded and that she should settle financially with the officers. She arrived at the police station, was taken to an office where PC Arden Jones who was one of the officers at the check point met her in the office and asked her how much she was willing to pay. Fearing that her vehicle be impounded and her driver's license revoked, she said $300. The officer then allowed her to go to the bank to withdraw the money which she did and later on returned to the office where she met PC Jones and gave him the money. Immediately thereafter she reported the matter to Mr. Cacho, the officer commanding Punta Gorda Town police station who took swift action by going to the office where Jones was and he retrieve the money from Jones. Jones was later subsequently arrested and charged for the crime of extortion jointly along with Miss Tanner. They will also be charge disciplinary for act to the prejudice if good order and discipline as well as soliciting a bribe and neglect of duty in respect of that matter."

To update, PC Jenny Tanner - who has been charged in this most recent case - had been charged for extortion before in Caye Caulker r- but that case was thrown out.
