Tonight 7News has received multiple credible reports which say that a Customs Law enforcement team shot a man in the area of Santa Cruz Orange Walk this evening. The circumstances are not known - but we do know that this is one of the most commonly used illegal border crossings - which goes over to Botes, Mexico.
Persons on the bus in the area when the shooting happened and his sister in law claim that Dwayne Almendarez was shot in the back. He survived and was rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital - where reports say he is still alive.
Now, as we have been reporting for months, there are countless contraband movements in this area - and the confrontations between law enforcement and the smugglers are becoming more and more hostile, with the smugglers showing open defiance. This atmosphere is what may have led to this shooting.
