Penny-wise In Pickstock

We also wondered about the effect of money on yesterday's race. A few hundred thousand dollars were spent on t-shirts, banners, mobilization, logistics and, not least taking care of voters in need - to put it gently.

Today, Wilfred Elrington - whose daughter Alifa came in second in the polling for councillors - told us he knows nothing about that big money rolling:...

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Our leaders, yourself, your party, the Opposition operate with complete impunity. You all can get any amount of money in cash from wherever you want to fund political galas like you did yesterday."

Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Pickstock Area Rep.
"You are giving me news Jules. I like to pride myself in saying that there is not a person in Belize City, not a merchant, Indian man - nobody can point to me and said I gave you a cent - not a single one. I always found my own resources from the monies which I was able to earn and save in large measure. I can't speak for others and so I can't endorse the sentiment you are expressing, but I can tell you from my own self and for my daughter, we did not get any resources. As far as I know from any outside source."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"She came in second in the poles."

Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Pickstock Area Rep.
"She did very well and would like that to attribute that to the popularity of our father, but I might be... I will tell you yesterday I went out there at 3:30 - quarter to 4. I didn't go near the place and I gave nobody a single cent while I was out there, not a cent."
