Houston’s Harvey Problem Has Resonance in Belize
posted (August 29, 2017)
Tonight, the city of Houston Texas has suffered a hurricane experience unlike any other this century, with the possible exception of Hurricane KATRINA in 2006.

Hurricane Harvey, that just missed Belize as a Tropical Storm, turned into a Superstorm that pounded Texas and then circled Houston for three days, dropping as much as 50 inches of rain and causing the loss of 9 lives.

Now, Houston is a city that Belize has many connections to. Thousands of Belizeans live there and it's also a hub for United and Southwest Airlines - both of which have had to cancel all their flights because the airports are closed.

Yesterday Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington said, Houston, we know your pain:..

Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"Houston is so well known to so many of us and the ravages of hurricane is also very well known to so many of us. I don't think I've seen anything as devastating as what is taking place in Houston Texas at this time and my heart really go out to all the people who are there and I know it's going to be a very difficult period for all of them for a long time, because the extent and nature of the devastation that the hurricane cause as we all know will be with the people in Texas for a long time to come. I'm sure it's going to have a negative impact for us here in Belize who have such a close relationship with the United States."

As many as 30,000 Texans have been forced into shelters.
