Irma Mashed Up Caribbean, Recovery May Take Years
posted (September 12, 2017)
Hurricane Irma is no longer a storm tonight and the remnants of this superstorm are lingering over the southeastern United States. But the effects of this storm will continue to be felt for many years in Caribbean island states where over 30 persons were killed. Countries like Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, St. Martin, and the British Virgin Islands were thoroughly battered by the storm - and now they are trying to put back the many broken pieces of tier lives, their homes and their communities. In Barbuda, for example, an estimated 90% of the homes were destroyed. We have these interviews from Barbuda courtesy ABS TV:...

The Caribbean Development Bank is in the process of providing Emergency Relief Grants of $200,00 US dollars each to Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

In addition, CDB has offered Immediate Response Loans of up to USD750,000 to the affected countries. The Loans, available on highly concessionary terms, are designed to support the clearing and cleaning of areas damaged by Hurricane Irma, and the emergency restoration of services.
