posted (September 13, 2017)
A 45 year old father of 10 is dead after he was knocked down and killed. It happened yesterday at noon. Jose Cucul was on his way to his Maya Mopan home on his bicycle when an oncoming van rammed into him. His skull was cracked from the impact - and he died shortly after at the western Regional Hospital. Courtney Weatherburne has more on this tragedy.

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
After only 2 months, Jose Cucul's farm is flourishing. His corn, beans and cassava are all thriving.

But Cucul won't be able to enjoy the produce of his labor.

He was knocked down and killed yesterday afternoon at the intersection of the Ring Road and Cemetery Road.

"I was standing right by the stop, bus stop waiting for all the trucks to pass when he was coming home for lunch. He was on the bike but there was a lot of vehicles on both sides but he was watching his way but the vehicle that was speeding didn't see what was happening that the bicycle was passing."

Lathraine Penner was driving that vehicle, a Honda Odyssey Van. She was heading straight along the ring road when she struck Cucul as he crossed unto cemetery road.

He was flung about 12 feet and landed in the drain.

"When I see the man, I say the man was dead that is what I shouted and I just didn't know what to do or what to say."

Cucul was rushed to the hospital but he didn't make it. The impact was too great. Now his wife, his 7 daughters and 3 sons are left helpless without him. They are calling on Penner for support in this difficult time.

Sylvia Cucul, Daughter
"We need her great assistance because we depend on my father because my brothers and sisters are going to school and who else will take care of them and pay their school fees without my father so therefore we need her great assistance in any way she can help us."

"My father is a very kind man and he does his best to take care of us and then right now we don't have anybody else."

Lathraine Penner has been served with a notice of intended prosecution. If Penner or anyone would like to assist this needy family you can call 662-5635.
