BTV, Around The Island
posted (September 13, 2017)
The Belize Territorial Volunteers are going back to the Sarstoon this Saturday September 16th. But, this time they say they are not trying to bait the Guatemalan Navy; they're doing an Eco-challenge. It's a Kayak and canoe race - and co-organizer Mario Lara told us more:..

Mario Lara, BTV
"It's a kayak, canoe race around Sarstoon. We're starting at Barranco Village, we're going to go around Sarstoon island- which belongs to Belize- and then we're going to go back to Barranco Village."

Jules Vasquez- Reporter
"Critics would say that it is a provocation disguised as a fun day."

Mario Lara, BTV
"Sarstoon is squarely in Belizean territory so we're not thumbing the nose at the Guatemalans. Yes, we are standing up for Belize's territorial integrity but not in a disrespectful manner. We're doing it in a very safety conscious, solidarity, kind of patriotic manner. So I don't believe that that is being insulting or thumbing our noses or even being controversial. This is Belize's territory and we're going to be safe, we are going to be very conscious about staying on our side of the river and staying on our side, circumnavigating the island which is on our side of the issue. Last year we did this event and obviously, there were some…the Guatemalans did enter our territorial waters and we did make folks aware of that and that is something that as Belizeans we need to be aware of and we need to bring attention to the fact that that is happening. We are trying to get it focused on several different things. Number one, the patriotism; number two, the environment and the environmental aspects; and number three, the economic development- we are trying to bring more attention to this area."

The event starts at Barranco Village at 9:00 am and there is a Free bus ride from Cayo leaving from in front of Falcon field at 4:00 am sharp.
