Dominica Mauled By Maria
posted (September 19, 2017)
"We have lost all what money can buy and replace..."

Those were the words of Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit after a powerful Category 5 storm, Hurricane Maria tore through the small island state last night with winds of over 160 miles per hour.

Tonight, no one knows the full extent of the damage to the place called "The Nature Isle" because communications are limited, and transport is hampered by damage to road infrastructure and fallen trees.

In a Facebook post last night, Prime Minister Skerrit called the physical damage caused by the storm, mind boggling. He added, quote, "So, far the winds have swept away the roofs of almost every person I have spoken to or otherwise made contact with. The roof to my own official residence was among the first to go and this apparently triggered an avalanche of torn away roofs in the city and the countryside."

Here's what he told ABS news in Antigua this morning.

Exactly four years ago, Skerrit was in Belize for the September 21st. festivities. On that visit, he was famously subjected to the humiliation of a stop and search by the Coast Guard, when he was returning from a visit to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
