PM Says GSU Is Being Looked At, For Re-purposing
posted (September 28, 2017)
The story bears some scrutiny, but most folks are just too happy that he's been found alive to really question the narrative. For the Barrow Administration, it is a big pressure release - since the government was being blamed for letting so-called GSU killers run loose. Now that's not what happened, but the Prime Minister made it clear that the government is attuned to public sentiment which doesn't have much sympathy for the GSU.

Today he said the unit may have to be re-purposed. But first he commented generally on the state of affairs:...

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"We are absolutely delighted that the young man who was missing for so many days has been found safe and is back with his family. It is now crystal clear that the GSU, except that it went on this mission, the young man was present and he fled upon the arrival of the GSU and the firing of the warning shots - that was the trigger for what subsequently happened with him, in terms of his having been missing. But apart from that the GSU, it is now proven has been guilty of nothing like the sorts of charges that certain members of the public were leveling against the GSU."

"While there are very many among us who are cynics by default, the willingness to believe the worst of the GSU did not arise just like that. For some time now the lamentations about the manner in which the GSU operates have been loud and long and the events prove that the divide between the citizenry and the GSU is altogether too much for us to ignore. There is therefore going to be at the very least a re-purposing of the GSU. The kind of serious analysis that the circumstances warrant will be conducted and at the end of that exercise all options will be on the table. More generally I saw where there were other incidents reported that seem to involve misbehavior, irregularities, to put it mildly on the part of other elements of the Belize Police Department. We therefore will need also in my view to look at things in the round in so far as the Belize Police Department in concerned."
