COMPOL Says GSU Not Going Anywhere
posted (October 4, 2017)
And in that same breath, Police Commissioner Whylie also said that as far he knows, the Gang Suppression Unit isn't going anywhere.

Now, you'll remember last week when Prime Minister Dean Barrow acknowledged the public mistrust for the GSU. That's because many in the public were all too willing to believe the worst of the unit, suspecting that they killed 17 year-old Kelvin Usher when he went missing near Lucky Strike Village.

The Prime Minister said, "There is... going to be...a re-purposing of the GSU."

Some have interpreted that statement to mean that it may be disbanded, but the Commissioner said that that's not his impression:

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
"The GSU Commander I'll be meeting with later today and I'll have a discussion in terms of that unit. Obviously as the names indicates its primary focus should be the gangs. The gangs and the drugs and the drug trades are inter-related, so there are connections, but as I indicate I will be speaking with the officer and we will see what we need to do in terms of ensuring that there is no doubt in terms of what their primary tasking and focus should be on."

Reporter
"So there is no intention of doing away with that unit of the department?"

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
"Not to my knowledge at this time ma'am."

We'll have a little more from the Commissioner later on in the news.
