Santa Marta Villagers Still Out of Their Homes
posted (October 5, 2017)
As many as 50 families In Santa Marta village in the Orange Walk District continue to be dislocated by extreme flooding. As we showed you yesterday, the waters rolled in on Monday evening, flooded farms, and forced people out of their homes. One resident in a shelter told CTV-3 news that the water in his house was up to his waist. Here's his account, translated:

Jorge Luis Lanza, Villager - Santa Martha
"It's something...an experience, I've never had in my life before. It's like, all of a sudden the water just started to rise. And by two or three in the afternoon, the water was at my waist. The truth is I got frightened because I have family, I have my kids and my wife, my children, my siblings. We managed to take out some stuff, but some of them just stayed there."

"And that's why we are in the community center now because we don't have anywhere to stay. So…I don't know what will happen, only time will tell."

"We need to just hold on a bit, but, first, God, make the weather calm down, and the water go down, so we can work like before."

"Everything we have, all our plantation in the bush is damaged by the water, we lost everything. I had my pepper my cilantro, and I lost everything my cassava, my plantain, everything was submerged in the water."

"But, what can we do? It's lost. We cannot do anything. It's the nature of life, we cannot go against the rain."

NEMO confirms that 8 families are at the villager shelter, while 40 families were forced out of their homes and are staying with family and friends.
