The Importance Of Standardizing Labels On Packaged Food
posted (October 5, 2017)
Today in Belize City, the Belize Bureau of Standards held a consultation with producers of pre-packaged goods. The goal of the consultation was to get the opinion from Stakeholders on the standards for labelling their products.

Rodolfo Gutierrez told us more about the importance of the consultation.

Rodolfo Gutierrez, Belize Beaurau of Standards Consumer Protection Liaison Officer
"This will be a compulsory standard like I said for pre-packaged foods what that does for everybody especially in the industry especially the small and medium enterprises it prepares them to get that quality assurance level of their business established nowadays the markets are having some requirements especially if you want to export you need to at least start with the labelling aspect of it. It is very key."

"It has to have things like the ingredients of what your product is actually establishing. It has to have not really an expiry date but when the product is good for."

"At the ending of the day everything that is provided within the specifications is for consumer protection purposes to ensure that consumers are aware of what the product actually contains."

"This is actually the comment stages where the standard is being exposed to these stakeholders and hopefully we get good comments from them and then we will be able to integrate the comments in this process and then make necessary adjustments."

The Belize Bureau of Standards also did a consultation with stakeholders in Belmopan. Gutierrez says the final document with the requirements for the labeling of pre-packaged goods should be completed by the middle of next year.
