And while that triple traffic fatality is taking the headline tonight, in Belize City many southside communities are on edge because of escalating gang warfare. A 22 year old father of four was killed last night in the gang ridden Jane Usher Area and a 28 year old was shot in the head this afternoon in the St. Martin's area.
28 year old Jason Almendarez was on Jasmine Street at a food spot - just a few blocks from his home. He had pulled up in a vehicle and went in to get the food, at a neighborhood kitchen where he was well known. But while he was waiting for the food, a gunman walked in off the street and shot him in the head. Police have not issued any report yet, but a family member told us he survived but is in very critical condition.
In an update, police have confirmed that this afternoon's shooting victim Jason Almendarez died while receiving treatment at 5:55 pm.
Police say he had been shot to the back of head and the left shoulder.
Police say that at 2:08pm he went to buy food at Fish Joint food Shop on Jasmine St and a gunman came from behind and fired several shots at him.
