PM Says He Won’t Be Around To Stop or Encourage Vega
posted (October 19, 2017)
KREM's Orson Picart also asked the Prime Minister about his former Deputy Gaspar Vega. A few weeks ago Vega told the media he might be inclined to run again for the UDP in Orange Walk North, despite the scandals attached to his name.

When asked whether he would welcome or reject that, Prime Minister Barrow said - with more than a little relief - that he won't be around for that headache:

Reporter
"Your former deputy Prime Minister Mr. Gaspar Vega made comments that should he need to run again up north he would. Now considering the amount of allegation of corruption surrounding the Vega family, what would be your comments to what he actually said months ago that he would consider running for the UDP up north, if needs be?"

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister
"My comment sir that I can have nothing to do with that. By that time remember that I will have retired."

Reporter
"Understandably so sir, but I am thinking that as present prime minister and I know your successor has already given his comments on what Mr. Vega has said."

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister
"Oh you know who my successor will be, ahead of me?"

Reporter
"Well obviously it seems that the next person to take up the mantle would be Mr. Faber. But that is yet to be seen."

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister
"You see, there you go."

Reporter
"As the now Prime Minister would you care to share your thoughts on his considering to run for the UDP, without making a whole hullabaloo of the thing and having your supports laughing over there."

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister
"That's what I am saying sir. When I retire, one thing you can be sure of, the new leader will not have to be looking over his shoulder to see if I am anywhere in the background. When I am out, I am out."
