A Harvest of Plenty (Corn)
posted (October 23, 2017)
In the midst of all the weekend violence, several kids and adults from Belize City were able to escape from it all at Central Farm at the annual Harvest for Kids event. Lead organizer Alexander Perez told us that this year they collected an exceptional amount of corn as 10 combines worked simultaneously on 40 acres:

Alexander Perez, Director Of Belize Camping Experience
"We went to the harvest this Saturday and one of the most amazing things was there was a harvest and farmers and farmers came from Spanish Lookout."

"We had 8 machines that came out and they had a parade."

"When we started getting the harvest what was the most incredible thing is that we got a bumper crop."

Sahar Vasquez, reporter
"What is a bumper crop?"

Alexander Perez
"Meaning you get a super good crop. We got 80 sacks per acre per corn is really amazing. So 50 is very good but 80 is you already paid the expenses of the field."

"One of the great things that happen with the harvest for kids event is that we actually bring kids from Belize City and we take them in different of stages of the crop."

"We took some kids from Jane Usher and it was really exciting to see the farmers take the kids. They took turns they jumped into the combines and they got rides as they were harvesting the field."

Marco Barrientos, Volunteer
"My First experience for harvest was really good seeing the children happy from just the reception of the invitation to them arriving there. They were all excited and them going on the combines and wanting to take more turns. It was excellent."

The participating kids are usually between the ages of 6 and 12.
