New Bze-Mex Transport Agreement, No Press Invited, No Details
posted (October 31, 2017)
Belize today signed a major transport agreement with Mexico - but we can't tell you too much about it tonight, because, again, the press was blocked out of the event.

All we know comes from a 150 word release which says that today in Belmopan Minister of Transport Edmond Castro, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on International Motor Carrier, Passenger and Freight Transportation with Mexico's Federal Motor Carrier General Director, Adolfo Elim Luviano Heredia.

Now, there are so many transport issues between Belize and Mexico: there are the Belizean busses in Chetumal - and the Mexican busses in Belize; then there are the private cars that travel to Chetumal and beyond with no insurance; and the couriers who haul cargo and vehicles through Mexico.

We would imagine all these subjects would be touched in an agreement on "Carrier, Passenger and Freight Transportation" - but, we can only imagine, because the press didn't even know the signing was happening.

A release says discussions on the Memorandum commenced in February when Castro and Mexico's Ambassador to Belize Carlos Quesnel Melendez held an initial meeting in Belmopan. Their release reports that was followed up by another meeting with executives and technical staff from both governments.

This policy of avoiding the media for the signing of important contracts and agreements is what caused the recent controversy over the Faber's Road contract.
