Belmopan Police Got Information for Hit and Run Arrest From Community
posted (November 1, 2017)
In last night's newscast, we told you about the breakthrough that Belmopan police made in the weekend accident on the Southern Highway which killed Mellisa Dorothy Andrews, and put her husband, Allen Andrews, in the hospital.

As we told you, Dangriga police were treating it as a hit and run. That's because they had no idea who was driving the vehicle which hit the couple's motorbike, between miles 11 and 12, an area between Sittee River and Silk Grass villages.

Well, Belmopan Police police received information from the pubic which led them to find this white cargo truck with a damaged front end. It is believed that this is the vehicle which knocked down the couple.

The cops impounded the vehicle and detained the man they believed was behind the wheels at the time of the accident. Tonight, he is on his way to Dangriga to be charged tomorrow.

Today, we asked the Belmopan Commander about it, and he told us that it was thanks to the community which has a good relationship with his officers:

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett, OC - Belmopan Police
"Our community is very savvy with us and we received the information and we acted on it and I could tell you that we have a person in custody. I believe a few statements have been recorded. We have the vehicle that we believe was involved in that accident and Dangriga Police has been alerted and they will be dealing with the case. But we are so happy to have been able to bring some kind of closure to this case in terms of having the right person in custody and the investigation will be now taken over by Dangriga. I want to say thanks to the public of Belmopan for continuing supporting the Belmopan Police, because without them we won't be able to solve any of the crimes that I alluded to a short while, inclusive of this traffic accident."

Best information to 7News is that is that Allen Andrews had stopped to fix something on the bike, when the cargo truck hit both of them. Latest information from police says that Dorothy Andrews was actually stuck on the front end of the truck, and people inside that truck removed her and left her on the side of the road dead, and then drove off. Very heinous behaviour, and tomorrow we'll tell you what the charges are.
