UNFPA And the Worlds Populations
posted (November 1, 2017)
Today at the Radisson, the UNFPA launched The State of the World Populations Report in Belize City. The report highlights why countries struggle globally when it comes to economic growth and development. According to the Liason officer of the UNFPA, the report is a breakthrough because goes beyond looking the usual issues that are identified. She gave us more insight this afternoon.

Tisa Grant, United Nations Population fund Liaison Officer
"This particular report is path-breaking because it goes beyond the standard economic measures that one would look at such as wealth and it looks at how there are other inequalities such as inequalities in access to sexual and reproductive health, information services, commodities etc. and how these things affect a person's ability to generate income as well as a countries economic development growth."

"There is a lot of things in the report and this is why it is so important because there are so many issues that the report talks about that is relevant to the entire globe. Remember this report looks at how inequalities amongst certain persons would cause us not to achieve the sustainable development goals which promise to leave nobody behind. If we are not leaving anyone behind it means that we are going to look at all those persons that are furthest behind."

The report does have a section on Belize that shares general statistics about matters like maternal mortality and adolescent birth rate. It also has ten action points that can assist a country in moving forward when it comes to addressing the inequalities.

When The Trainees Become Trainers

In the beginning of October, we told you about the Gang Reduction and Education Training program. 25 police officers attended where they were trained and certified to become GREAT instructors. After the course, they took the information they learnt to the classroom, and today after a few weeks of hard work, their students graduated. 7News was at the ceremony at the community centre in Ladyville and we heard how meaningful the training was to all involved.

Randy Lawrence, Corporal of Police/G.R.E.A.T Instructor
"The course has different outlines. You had decision making. We taught them about bullying and the actions and consequences in society."

"It is a move to ensure that they resist gang in the event that someone tries to recruit them."

"I must say the class that I taught they were very receptive to the program and from the onset of the training to the conclusion. I saw the change in them. The difference. They took the program very seriously and the things that were thought to them they were doing it in reality so I believe it was pretty much a success."

Alexandra Castellanos, Ladyville Evangelical School/G.R.E.A.T Graduate
"We learnt about how to control our anger."

Sahar Vasquez, reporter
"So how do you think this G.R.E.A.T course impacted your students?"

Jenny Garcia, Teacher at Ladyville Evangelical School
"Truly I am amazed at this class this year. This class is a blessing to me and when I am teaching them they are calm and they are obedient and it does make a difference for them."

Sahar Vasquez, reporter
"Do you think that this course is giving them a good lesson in terms of how to control that anger?"

Jenny Garcia, Teacher at Ladyville Evangelical School
"Yes truly it is because I see the difference because they still have to face hard situations but they know how to deal with it."

A total of 115 primary school students graduated. The different police instructors will continue to check up on the classes they taught and hope to continue imparting the important skills to more children.

Cheers For Capital Cops

On Monday, we told you how Belmopan Police moved swiftly and decisively to wrap up their investigation into the armed robbery at the First Stop Pawn Shop.

It happened on last week Thursday where 3 men held up the manager and her employee at gunpoint and robbed the pawnshop of $8,500 in cash, and 51,000 dollars in assorted jewelry.

Well, in less than 72 hours, Sergeant Julio Shal, Corporal Mateo Carrillo, Constable Jose Uh, from Belmopan, worked with Assistant Superintendent Alejandro Cowo from Belize City to crack the case. They recovered 95% of the stolen items, and 3 people from Belize City were arrested and charged in connection with the crime.

Their bosses felt that these officers needed to be awarded for their good police work. That's why they were treated a free lunch and award ceremony at the Bull Frog Inn at Belmopan this afternoon.

7News stopped by and spoke with the top cops and these awardees. Here's what they told us:

So, the 4 officers got treated to that lunch, courtesy the Bull Frog Inn, a certificate from their police superiors, and a 150 dollar gift for each from Scotia Bank in Belmopan.
