Loose Gravel Causes Head On Collision
posted (November 7, 2017)
And while that accident may work out to a mutually agreeable resolution, there was another on the George Highway this morning, which has put 2 of the victims in the hospital.

It happened at around 7:00 on the stretch of road between miles 5 and 6. 25 year-old Devon Bailey was driving a grey Lexus car towards Belize City with passenger, 25 year-old Rhondine Valerio.

But, that part of the road is under construction, meaning it has loose gravel. He lost control and crashed head on into this oncoming Unicomer delivery truck. That truck was driven by 55 year-old Santiago Perez

The Lexus ended up in a ditch on the opposite side of the road, completely wrecked with the airbags deployed, and Valerio and Bailey were trapped inside. The Fire Department personnel had to extract them from what was left of the car. Fortunately, they survived, and police say that Bailey suffered head injuries and a broken leg. Valerio also suffered significant injury, and police say that she is in a critical but stable condition.

A notice of intended prosecution has been served, according to police.

But, the matter may be complicated by the road works. Motorists who use the road daily say that there is no sign warning drivers that this part of the highway has loose gravel. It's also re-do job after the first surface which was done by Imer Hernandez Development Company hardly lasted a few months - and when the recent rains came, multiple potholes appeared after the chip and seal surface came undone.
