Beez In The Channel 7 Trap
posted (November 7, 2017)
Today at our 7news office we literally had "beez in the trap." But it wasn't a Nicki Minaj block party, it was a real swarm of killer bees which had formed a massive hive at the back of our office.

That's the same thing that happened in September of 2014, and once again, the Agriculture Department swooped in to save us from a killer bee calamity.

A big deal for us, but for these guys, just another day of bee butchery.

We tease, but for all those with killer hives in their homes or offices, the Department warns about the importance of calling for help:

Francisco Xui, Extension Officer for Belize District
"What we are doing today is eliminating a swarm at the house at the back why we are doing it because it is a nuisance to the public and could really harm somebody when they are being disturbed we don't like to do it because they are one of the top pollinators we have in the ambient however because it is a threat to the community we have to do the destruction. There are plans to develop a trapping program whereby we could set bait in the area and have them go into the box and then every 2 weeks maybe we move them out and provide the service or the colony to a beekeeper where it will be more used than us destroying it."

"We normally provide for the public like parks, schools and community centres like that. The public would have to provide the fish. It is not something we do how do you say voluntarily but it is something that takes a lot from our job because this is not our real job but because none wants to do it we end up providing the service."

"We are located in the North Front Street Building. It is something that we normally do every day but if you have the problem at home please do not fast with it just leave it so that we could address it if you fast with it believe me it is going to harm you."

Xui emphasizes the importance of calling for help rather than trying to eliminate the bees yourself as it can have deathly consequences. You can visit their office at the North Front Street Building or call the Belize Agriculture Department.
