Two Men Walk The Not So Fine Line Between Human Traffic And Major Theft
posted (November 8, 2017)
In mid-September, this man allegedly made off with sixty thousand dollars of his boss's money and stole his SUV, but police still haven't charged 23 year old Keyur Barot.

After an Interpol alert was put out on Barot and his companion, another former employee, 29 year old Jitendra Kumar, the pair was intercepted in Mexico, making their way north, possibly to the US border. Mexican authorities handed them back over to Belizean police on October first along with 13 thousand US dollars - possibly the money changed with stolen Belize dollars.

But, 5 weeks later, the Indian nationals haven't seen a courtroom or a holding cell, instead, they're reported to be in a safe house. And that's because - the pair allege they were victims of human trafficking. Our reports say they are in the custody of the Department of Social Services as possible trafficking victims. The men have told a story of their former boss locking them up in a warehouse for breaking the rules, and not being properly compensated for their work.

But, the trafficking case doesn't seem to be going anywhere. We say that because their former boss, importer Jack Charles says no one has reached out to question him. He flatly refutes the allegations of human traffic and says he has evidence to show they were not held against their will at any time, and that they were fully compensated.

We messaged the CEO in the Ministry of Human Development Judith Alpuche to ask her about the case, but she flatly said that she had no comment. We also tried to reach the DPP, but, up until news time, she had not responded to our phone calls and text message requests for a comment.

The complaint against the men is that Keyur Barot collected and signed for 60 thousand dollars for Charles from a business in Dangriga Town on September 13th. He never handed over the money to Charles nor did he return to work with his boss's SUV. Instead, it is believed that he met up with Kumar and they headed west. The pair was next seen in Mexico 10 days later. Charles's Chevy Equinox was found abandoned in Guatemala. Guatemalan police returned the vehicle to Belize police two weeks ago.
