Japanese Money For Belmopan City Council
posted (November 27, 2017)
The Japanese Government donated over $170,000 Belize dollars to the Belmopan City Council today. Now the City Council has been struggling to properly dispose of the city's waste because their run down garbage trucks are barely holding up. But with this donation, Deputy Mayor Ralston Frazer says they will be able to upgrade. Here is more.

Ralston Frazer, Deputy Mayor, Belmopan
"Actually within our term since 2015 we inherited some garbage trucks that have been there for at least 1,000 years before and it started when the first two broke down and then we got another one which was not quite up there but nonetheless it was working and we could have afforded it at the time but when they broke down, we decided to take parts from one and we came up with a good one and that was the one that had been running since then and it was not initially in a very good condition and it just spent its time and we decided you know lets touch base with those people from overseas who look at us favorably and we share such relationship with and hear what their response will be and today we see the response."

Courtney Wetherburne, reporter
"What is the exact amount that you got today and what exactly will you be doing with it, I am sure the garbage truck will be first on the list."

Ralston Frazer
"It is a little over $86,500 US and all of that is to purchase a relatively new compactor truck to service the community of Belmopan."

Shinchi Yamanaka, Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan
"This is kind of our Grassroots activities and we have some attention on human security because waste disposal and management is an important and common issue in the world and in particular they have some willingness to clean up Belmopan City and therefore we has some collaboration."

The total of the donation is $175,078. The donation is part of a Grassroots Human Security Grant project by the Japanese Government. Under this same project, a new classroom building will be constructed at the Bishop Martin High School in Orange Walk. That school project will cost over $200,000.
