Cane Farmers Protest Against Contract
posted (November 27, 2017)
The harvest for the 2017-2018 cane crop season starts on December 4th, but things aren't necessarily going smoothly. Today farmers from the powerful BSCFA were protesting against the Sugar Cane Production Committee. They're unhappy with a new agreement that the SCPC has hammered out for harvesting groups.

The SCPC wants to know some very precise details for quality assurance programs currently in the pipeline - but the farmers aren't comfortable with it.

And today, about 50 of them staged a small protest outside the offices of the Sugar Industry Control Board in the Orange Walk District. While they railed outside, leaders of the different cane farmers groups of the BSCFA met with the Chairman of the SCPC inside to hammer out a way forward.

At the end of it, they decided to revert to the old agreement for the time being. Another meeting is scheduled for Thursday to finalize a decision.
