Where The Streets Have A New Name
posted (November 29, 2017)
Taiwan has done a whole lot for Belize and in a gesture of gratitude, The Belize City Council today gave them "Taiwan Street." It's a renaming of North Park Street - which is where the Taiwanese Embassy is. The gesture may seem small but to the Taiwanese Embassy, it is a welcome show of appreciation and acknowledgement. We spoke to the Taiwanese Ambassador and Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington:

Ambassador Charles Liu, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize
"Taiwan and Belize. We have a strong bond so we wanted to be a permanent monument to be established in Belize City. We wanted something physical to symbolize the friendship so that is why we cooperated with the city council and then we thought naming the street Taiwan Street would be a good idea. When people come in from Taiwan and other parts of the world people always like to say that this is a very beautiful street and now when they take the photo they will see that this is Taiwan Street in Belize City, Belize. Then they will be making it more famous for more tourists to come not only to Taiwan but also to Belize."

Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"I think it is a good gesture to show our gratitude, of course, the friendship which we have. I think it is very difficult to find a more tangible way to say thanks in a meaningful way to a country like Taiwan that has so much going for it and they seem to be most concerned with seeing how they can help to develop our country."

At the end of the ceremony, Mayor Darrel Bradley presented Ambassador Liu with the new street sign and the Key to the city. Taiwan Street is right in front of the Taiwanese embassy. The street was originally named North Park Street.
