COMPOL Still Mum On Allegation Of Station Rape
posted (December 5, 2017)
More than three weeks ago - two women alleged that they had been raped at the Independence Village police station. Facing mounting scrutiny, Police have done what they usually do and stopped talking about the case - since the alleged perpetrators are still on active duty - and no one has been charged. Yesterday we pressed the commissioner for answers but none were forthcoming.

Allen Whylie, Commisioner of Police
"It has been mentioned regularly on the airwaves and in the media and I would not want to go back into discussion that matter. I can assure that a investigation is ongoing and once that investigator is satisfied he has concluded, that file will be sent to the DPP and whatever advice and instructions that is given, I can guarantee you it will be adhere to."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Is there a culture in the department where the department seeks to protect its own from criminal charges? I have seen at the court for example when police are criminally charged, the work at the court almost distinctively shield them from the media and have them come in through the back and that sort of thing. Is there that culture sir, that fraternity?"

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
"I will disagree with you. You look at the record we have had many police officers who have been arrested and charged for criminal misconduct. We've also have a number of officers who are in prison and so I think sometimes when we have complaints against police officers we go all out. In terms of the conduct of persons who are at the courts and shielding police officers, I can tell you I do not agree with it. I have spoken in the past to the prosecution branch commander in terms of why is it that we allow the officers to shield them. If they do the wrong thing and they end up before the court, then they should be treated like any other person who appears before the court."

Contrary to what the Commissioner said - the investigation has finished and the file has already been sent to the DPP.
