Bail For Alleged Cocaine Cowboys
posted (December 21, 2017)
In other news of cocaine trafficking, 2 alleged cocaine cowboys Peter Schmidt and Carlos Lopez got bail today.

This is two days after they were remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being busted with 5 kilo bricks of cocaine and a loaded firearm.

Their attorneys, Ellis Arnold and Oscar Selgado, made bail applications on their behalf before Justice Adolph Lucas today. After hearing their attorneys' arguments, and the response of Crown Counsel Sheneiza Smith, Justice Lucas granted them bail of 100 thousand dollars.

It comes with the conditions that Schmidt and Lopez both need to report to the police stations nearest to their homes in Cay Caulker and Ladyville every Friday. Also, Lopez had to surrender his passport. Schmidt, who has no travel documents, is not allowed to apply for any.

As we reported, police say that these 2 men were busted after several police units performed surveillance on them, tracking their movements. A police checkpoint was set up in the Buttonwood Bay area where the white Toyota 4Runner they were traveling in was stopped and searched.

The men were busted with 5.07 kilos of cocaine, which was inside a knapsack on the backseat. The officers found a 9 millimeter pistol with 11 live rounds under the seat. Both men were charged with drug trafficking, keeping an unlicensed firearm, and keeping unlicensed ammunition.
