Husband and Wife Lose Life in Cotton Tree Hit And Run
posted (December 27, 2017)

It was a terrible Christmas Holiday on Belize’s highways. Five people were killed and one man is on life support after a slew of serious accidents.

We start in Cotton Tree where four children are left without a parent, after a couple died when they were knocked off their motorbike by a hit and run driver. It happened on Christmas Eve night at around
11:15.

24 year old Oscar Rene Alvarado and his common law wife 33 year old Linda Carolina Hernandez were found on the highway between miles 42 and 43.  She was near death, and he was already dead.  Police rushed her to the hospital, but she died while receiving treatment.

They were traveling westbound on a small motorbike which was found 200 feet away, extensively damaged on the shoulder of the road.

We’re told that the couple was heading to their home in San Martin Belmopan when the car violently rear ended them. This evening, we got a chance to speak with Alvarado’s sister, who told us that their annual Christmas get-together as a family is marred by this double tragedy.

Inga Veron â€" Sister of Deceased

“All of us was hanging here, a family gathering and me and my boyfriend left minutes after 11:30, we left and they stayed here. So they said mom I’m going home now it’s time for me to go home and we were happily taking pictures before we left, all of us me, my mom, my sister, him and his girlfriend were together taking pictures and I told him I’m leaving and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and we left then my mom said early in the morning, the 25th the Christmas my uncle called her so I went and I called her and my dad spoke and I didn’t understand nothing what my dad said so when I asked him dad what is it he said your brother is no more, your brother is gone.â€￾

Daniel Ortiz

“None moment you guys are talking and on Christmas day you are being told that he was killed.â€￾

Inga Veron

“Yes everybody was gathering together and then all of a sudden the next day the bad news that he is gone, he was knocked down. The person that knocked them down ran away.â€￾

Daniel Ortiz

“That must make you angry.â€￾

Inga Veron

“Exactly you know the person is in that situation at least stop and say do you need help, do you need something or let me take you to the hospital but it was not like that, the person just hit him and ran like that. I hope and I pray to god that we find the person that did this and let them pay because those two lives were innocent, my brother was one person he was not drinking first of all and he was not a trouble maker to say he would look for a fight or he would be making a lot of trouble. He was a careful driver, many times he used to tell me sis let’s go I will ride you. If I’d go he make sure that helmets are on and if he needs to go into a curve or a turn his light is on, the signal light is on.â€￾

Alvarado had one child, while Hernandez had three.
Nearby, the police also found a Volkswagen hood ornament suggesting that was the vehicle which ran them over. That vehicle has not been found.

Anyone who may know the whereabouts of this car is asked to call the nearest police station or 922TIPS.
